He began photographing Camargue horses seriously in the early 2000s and began building lasting relationships with local breeders, Gardians and horse owners. Those relationships, built on trust and respect, now make possible the exclusive photographic experiences you'll enjoy during this workshop.

He has welcomed photographers from many countries and helped them improve their vision, technique and creative approach.

His approach is based on :

  • understanding animal behaviour

  • anticipating unique moments

  • working with natural light

  • creating images with emotion and atmosphere

"For more than twenty-five years, I've returned to the Camargue season after season. Every workshop still feels unique because no sunrise, no horse and no encounter is ever the same. Sharing those moments with a small group of photographers remains the most rewarding part of my work."

I signed up for this intensive workshop for the opportunity to photograph horses running on the beach and stallions play-fighting each other.

Our group came away with hundreds of amazing images but what really sticks with me is the experience of getting to know the horses over the course of the week. We had one afternoon with my favorite herd that included a mare and her 2-3 month old foal. The interaction was priceless!

Patrice has perfected his horse photography with these amazing creatures for many years and his expertise (and patience) is legendary.

You won't find a better guide to lead you through the experience of the White Horses of the Camargue. I hope to have an occasion to come back for another week soon.

I’ve attended many photography workshops over the years, and this experience was truly exceptional. Patrice has a rare ability to meet each participant exactly where they are—whether you’re just starting out or have been shooting for years.

What stood out most is his approach: never intrusive, always available. If you want space to explore, he gives it. If you’re ready to push your skills further, his guidance is precise, thoughtful, and immediately impactful.

The entire week felt thoughtfully curated—from our gracious and welcoming hosts at the hotel to the rhythm of the morning and afternoon shoots.

Unlike anything else I’ve attended, and an experience that meaningfully elevated my photography.

My wife and I took a six-session photography workshop with Patrice Aguilar. It was a magical experience, the Camargue, the horses, the sea... the weather was fantastic, and we were able to improve our skills. Thank you, Patrice.

Jean-Louis et Nadège Boulanger - France

Patrice Aguilar is not only a great professional photographer with over 25 years of experience photographing horses and their environment, but also someone who will share his knowledge with you when you need it most. It's also important to highlight Patrice's flexibility during photo sessions, for example, by changing locations in case of inclement weather. This is thanks to his personal relationships with the ranchers who rent us the horses for the photo shoots.

Patrice is also excellent in terms of organization, outside of photography. He's attentive to every detail and always willing to help. We could also mention his cheerful nature.

I've known Patrice for many years, and I never tire of returning to the Camargue with him.

Day by day program

DAY 1 – Entering the World of the Camargue

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at Marseille Provence Airport before we journey south towards the vast wetlands and legendary landscapes of the Camargue.

After settling into the hotel, we'll gather for a relaxed welcome briefing, where you'll meet the other photographers, discuss the week ahead and prepare your equipment for the experiences to come. It's also the perfect moment to get to know each other and share the excitement of the days ahead.

As the afternoon light softens, we'll ease into the rhythm of the Camargue with our first photography session at one of the region's renowned bird reserves. Flamingos, herons and egrets offer an ideal introduction to the area's extraordinary wildlife while allowing you to familiarise yourself with the light, landscapes and atmosphere that make this region unlike anywhere else in Europe.

We'll return to the hotel after sunset, ready to begin the real adventure at first light the following morning.

DAY 2 – The Power of the White Horses

Before dawn, we'll venture deep into the marshes for one of the most iconic experiences of the entire workshop.

As the first rays of sunlight illuminate the water, a herd of magnificent white horses will thunder towards you, sending sprays of water into the golden morning light. Standing just metres away as this extraordinary spectacle unfolds is an experience that very few photographers will ever have the privilege to enjoy.

Drawing on more than twenty-five years of experience in the Camargue, Patrice will help you anticipate the horses' behaviour, understand the changing light and position yourself to create images filled with movement, atmosphere and emotion.

During the warmest hours of the day, you'll have time to relax, review your photographs or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Camargue.

In the evening, the atmosphere changes completely. The horses will race across the dry marshlands, raising spectacular clouds of golden dust beneath the setting sun. The contrast between the morning's water and the evening's dust creates two entirely different photographic experiences, offering exceptional variety within a single day.

DAY 3 – Traditions and Freedom

Today reveals another side of the Camargue, one shaped not only by nature, but also by centuries of tradition.

At sunrise, two authentic Gardians, the legendary horsemen of the Camargue, will welcome us for an exclusive portrait session. Dressed in traditional attire and mounted on their white horses, they embody the enduring spirit of this remarkable region. Together, we'll create elegant storytelling images where culture, landscape and light blend into timeless compositions.

Throughout the morning, Patrice will share his approach to portrait composition, visual storytelling and the subtle details that elevate a beautiful photograph into a meaningful image.

As evening approaches, we'll make our way to one of the Camargue's wild Mediterranean beaches.

With the sea glowing beneath the last light of day, the white horses will gallop freely along the shoreline, creating dramatic scenes of movement, reflections and backlit spray. This striking contrast between cultural heritage and untamed freedom makes today one of the most diverse and rewarding chapters of the workshop.

DAY 4 – Light, Elegance and Artistic Vision

The day begins in complete serenity among the rolling sand dunes of the Camargue.

Bathed in the delicate light of sunrise, two elegant white mares will pose against a minimalist landscape where soft colors, graceful lines and subtle textures create the perfect setting for refined Fine Art photography. This intimate session encourages a slower, more thoughtful approach, allowing you to explore composition, negative space and the beauty of natural light.

As the morning unfolds, the atmosphere gradually becomes more dynamic as the mares burst into a gallop through the shallow waters of the Mediterranean. The combination of flowing movement, sparkling reflections and endless horizons offers countless creative opportunities while Patrice provides individual guidance throughout the session.

Later in the afternoon, we'll return to one of the Camargue's finest bird reserves.

Under the warm glow of the golden hour, flamingos, herons, egrets and many other species become the stars of the evening. Rather than simply photographing birds, you'll learn to anticipate behaviour, work with changing light and create elegant wildlife images that convey both beauty and atmosphere.

By combining Fine Art horse photography, dynamic action and exceptional birdlife, this day offers one of the richest and most creatively rewarding experiences of the entire workshop.

DAY 5 – The Wild Heart of the Camargue

Our final full day begins with one of the most dramatic spectacles the Camargue has to offer.

As dawn breaks across the marshes, two powerful stallions confront each other in an impressive display of strength, instinct and dominance. Rearing high above the water, splashing through the shallows and challenging one another with explosive energy, they create unforgettable moments that perfectly capture the untamed spirit of the Camargue.

This demanding session is about more than fast shutter speeds. Patrice will help you read the horses' behaviour, anticipate decisive moments and transform raw action into compelling visual storytelling.

After some time to relax and review the morning's images, we'll return to the marshes as the light begins to soften once again.

The atmosphere could not be more different. The horses now move quietly through calm ponds where the still water reflects the changing colours of the evening sky. This peaceful session invites a slower, more artistic approach, rewarding careful composition, patience and sensitivity to light.

It is a fitting contrast to the morning's intensity and a beautiful reminder that the true magic of the Camargue lies in its remarkable diversity.

DAY 6 – One Last Sunrise

Our final morning together offers one last opportunity to experience the magic of the Camargue at dawn.

As the Mediterranean awakens beneath the first golden light, the white horses will gallop freely along the shoreline, their reflections stretching across the wet sand while waves and sea spray catch the rising sun. It is a breathtaking finale and the perfect occasion to put into practice everything you've learned throughout the week.

With Patrice offering personalised guidance until the very last session, you'll finish the workshop with renewed confidence, a portfolio of exceptional images and memories that will stay with you long after you've left the Camargue.

After breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye before returning to Marseille Provence Airport. More than a photography workshop, you'll leave with the feeling of having experienced one of Europe's most extraordinary landscapes from the inside, through privileged access, unforgettable encounters and six days shared with photographers who have the same passion.

Frequently asked questions

What photography level is required ?

This workshop is designed for enthusiastic amateurs and professional photographers who are comfortable using their camera in Manual, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority mode.

Whether you're looking to improve your wildlife photography or refine your creative vision, Patrice adapts his guidance to each participant's experience and objectives.

How many photographers will participate ?

To guarantee a personalised experience and maximum shooting opportunities, participation is strictly limited to 8 photographers.

This small group size allows everyone to receive individual guidance while enjoying plenty of space during each photo session.

Will I need waterproof equipment ?

Not necessarily, but I highly recommend bringing waterproof protection for your camera and a small towel.

Several horse sessions take place while standing in shallow water.

Chest waders are provided for all participants.

Which camera equipment should I bring ?
1 (or 2) DSLR or mirrorless camera is recommended, together with:
  • a telephoto lens (200–600 mm ideal)

  • a medium zoom (24–105 mm or similar)

  • spare batteries

  • memory cards

  • a monopod / Tripod (optional)

A detailed equipment guide will be sent after registration.

What is the weather like in November ?

November is one of the most beautiful seasons in the Camargue.

Typical temperatures range between 8°C and 18°C (46–64°F).

Mornings can be cool, while afternoons are often mild and pleasant.

Layered clothing is recommended.

Is this workshop physically demanding ?

Most locations are easily accessible.

Participants should simply be comfortable standing for moderate periods and walking short distances on sand or uneven ground.

The water sessions generally take place in shallow water while wearing chest waders.

What happens if the weather is bad ?

The Camargue offers beautiful photographic opportunities in almost every weather condition.

Patrice constantly adapts the schedule according to light, wind and local conditions to ensure the best possible photographic experience.

His long-standing relationships with local breeders also provide considerable flexibility when sessions need to be adjusted.

Are meals included ?
Breakfast is generally included with the hotel.

Lunches, dinners and drinks are not included, giving participants complete freedom to dine together or independently each evening.

Which airport should I fly into ?

Please book your flights to:

Marseille Provence Airport (MRS)

Airport transfers at the beginning and end of the workshop are included.

Detailed meeting instructions will be sent before departure.

Are the horse sessions guaranteed ?

Yes.

The horse sessions are privately organised in advance with trusted local breeders and horse owners.

Unlike public demonstrations, these exclusive sessions are specially designed for the workshop and represent one of the benefits of this unique experience.

Is accommodation included ?
Accommodation is available as an optional package.

You may either:

  • book the workshop only

  • or choose the workshop + accommodation package.

Full details are provided during registration.

Why is participation limited to only 8 photographers ?

Because exceptional photography requires space, flexibility and individual attention.

A small group allows everyone to work comfortably during each session, receive personalised guidance from Patrice and fully enjoy the exclusive nature of the experience.

For this reason, no additional places are added once the workshop is full.

Can non-photographer partners join ?

Depending on availability, accompanying partners may be able to join.

Please contact us before booking so we can discuss the available options.

What makes this workshop different from visiting the Camargue independently ?

This is probably the most important question.

The images featured on this page are only possible thanks to more than 25 years of trusted relationships with local breeders, Gardians and landowners.

Many of the locations and horse sessions are private and simply cannot be accessed independently.

This workshop offers not only photographic guidance, but privileged access to experiences that very few photographers will ever enjoy.

Still have a question ?
